Posted August 07, 2019 16:30:16 Australian rugby player Luke Edwards was struck by lightning on Sunday morning, and is in hospital in Auckland with serious head injuries, the All Blacks said in a statement.
The 22-year-old was playing for the Auckland Broncos in New Zealand’s second Test against the Chiefs at Eden Park when he was hit by the bolt and fell to the ground.
“Luke has been taken to Auckland Hospital with serious injuries and his condition is currently unknown,” the All Black statement read.
The Australian Rugby Union (ARU) and New Zealand Rugby League (NZRL) both confirmed that they were investigating the incident.
“The Auckland Police Department are investigating this incident and the NZRL is providing all assistance to the investigating police,” the ARU said.
“At this stage, no charges have been laid and the ARUs investigation will be closed at this time.”
The NZRL said it was working with authorities to understand the circumstances surrounding the incident and would provide updates as they became available.
“It is important to stress that this incident is not related to any specific incident in the NZRA or any other rugby union club,” the statement said.
ARU player Luke and a teammate were injured by lightning during their team’s Test match against the All Stars on Sunday in Auckland.
They have since been flown to Auckland for medical treatment.
A spokeswoman for Auckland’s Queen Elizabeth Hospital said the hospital was aware of the incident but declined to provide further information.
